Geolocation in Live Search

Posted in Internet by Paul Jenkins on the June 2nd, 2007

Just got back from holiday and we we’re getting DoS attacked on a geo-location project of mine www.iplocatethis.com. Getting over a million and a half hits on the /location.php?ip=127.0.0.1 (But lots of unique IP addresses) which returns XML co-ords and a brief location description, town, country etc. Got in touch with the offending IP’s owner and it turns out to be Microsoft’s Live Search.

Check out their new search http://search.imagine-live.com/. I am quite sure it is a test page but still quite interesting. You will notice the map at the right hand side when you try to find something. This is what is hitting the iplocatethis.com service.
There is also quite a lot going on in the search engine world and a few similar projects from other search engines.

    Searching on Yahoo gives

Error: Bad Feed We’re very sorry.
    Gremlins have stolen our ram.
    We sure will miss them.

We are having technical difficulties. We will rectify the problem very soon. Please try again shortly.

I am not surprised. Just as sucky as their regular search, but with more Web2.0 nonsense.
